Vijay .S. Athreye Vice President Rural Social and Micro insurance at TATA AIG Life Insurance Company (TALIC), India has been at the helm of the Micro insurance (MI) initiative of the company from their very first year of operations in 2001. Staring as a one man team with operations in only one State in India the micro insurance program at TALIC has over seven years evolved to a fifty two member team that has a footprint across fourteen States in India.

During the year April 2008 to March 2009 TALIC Micro insurance program retailed 177 thousand MI policies in Rural India which constituted 26 % of the total number of policies sold by the company during the year.

During his tenure TALIC succeeded in bidding for & securing assistance under the Financially Deepening Challenge Fund of the DFID for implementing ( 2003-2007 ) a Micro insurance community enterprise distribution model to cover landless Adult daily waged labour in Andhra Pradesh ( India ). Apart from co authoring a Micro insurance case study for CGAP in 2005, Vijay has been a speaker at many National / International development conferences including Munich Re MI global conferences, MI indicator workshops at Luxembourg and an UN Sustainability workshop at the Hague. In 2009 Vijay has been selected to represent TALIC on the Project management Board of  FINISH (financial Inclusion Improves Sanitation and health) a five year project that aims to integrate Microfinance, Micro insurance, and Sanitation development in Rural India with several International partners such as WASTE, SNS REALL Bank (Netherlands) and the UNU- MERIT at Maastricht.

Vijay holds a bachelors Degree in Engineering, and a Masters Degree in Business Administration, and has also been conferred the status of a Fellow of the Life Management Institute (LOMA – USA). Before TALIC  his services have been deployed in marketing and business strategy for Turnkey projects in Thermal Power Plants, Wind Farm development, capital equipments, automobiles and automotive products, consumer durables, helicopter charter aviation and Sales force automation software.
